Santa Barbara fire incidence - Fourth of July Firework safety

Hey... the web is abuzz with the Santa Barbara fire incidence! Right before the the 4th of July, when things are getting ready to dazzle up America's sky with galore of vibrant red, white and blue fire flashes, a wild fire storm in the Los Padres National Forest broke out. This wild Santa Barbara fire compelled the authorities to evacuate denizens living in the Canyon region, north of Goleta in the Santa Barbara County.

Kathy Good, the U.S. Forest Service spokesperson, said that the fire spread out wildly and burnt off around 50 acres of heavy brush in the Santa Ynez Mountains foothills. Wondering why this news is coming up here in this 4th of July ecard blog? Well, I request you friends to play safe with fireworks. It just take seconds to turn life to nothingness! I just want to let you know that I don't love to hear the shrilling sirens of the ambulances overpowering the Independence fun. Unfortunate this happens each year!

A report laid down by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that almost two-thirds of all fireworks accidents happenr in the days surrounding July 4th. Almost over 9,600 people had to rush to emergency rooms for fireworks-burn in the year 2004; sad news is that almost half of them were children under 15.

Yes... when it comes to the celebration of Fourth of July - nation's birthday we can think of nothing but sizzling smell of grilling BBQs and a dark evening sky adorned with the galring galore of glorious flashes - like the one in this fourth of july picture!

If you are planning a trip this 4th of july, try it to a spot that is going to sprinkle some grains of patriotism on you. There are certain spots that truly celebrate nation's birthday in the most awe-inspiring way. Check out these tips of 4th of july firworks displays.

Trust me... there could be nothing more patriotic than celebrating the nation's birthday in the nation's capital? A grand firework show is kicked off each year over the Washington Monument at around 9:20 p.m., throwing the city fun just out of gear! I have been there a couple of times to have the spectacular view of the Washington firework extravaganza! West Lawn is the right spot to find how America adorns herself with the multi-colored bursts.

New York City promises what we call 'Macy's firework display' on 4th of July each year. This has always been the biggest firework display in the United States, with over 120,000 bursts, soaring as high as about 1,000 feet right over the East River. You need to view the show to appreciate the real glory of the glaring flashes shadowing on the river breast!

New Orleans promises a rocking 4th of July celebration with awesome fireworks show galore over the Mississippi River, artistically choreographed to patriotic music which starts from 9:00 p.m.

If you are planning to flag on a trip to San Diego, just don't afford to miss the firework display over north San Diego Bay include Shelter Island and Harbor Island. The show starts at around 9 p.m. SeaWorld and LEGOLAND also put on their own displays, which gives the San Diego firework display entirely a distinctive dimension!

Freedom of religion! Just when the nation is getting ready to be buzzed with the Fourth of July fun, the web has been found abuzz with freedom of religion and 1st amendment. In our country, freedom of religion is a guaranteed constitutional right defined in the religion clauses of the 1st amendment. Freedom of religion -- as in the 1st amendment is closely related to separation of church and state, an idea written of by Thomas Jefferson.

The 1st Amendment prohibits the federal government from making any legal binding "respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Stars & Stripes Pie for the Fourth of July!!

Yummy to eat and very easy to bake recipes are always delightful. Here are some lip-smacking Fourth of July special pies, which are sure to make you drool. You can treat all your friends over this yummy pie this July!!

Serves 10

Active: 20 min
Total: 1 hr 20 min
Planning Tip: The cookies can be baked up to 2 weeks ahead and frozen airtight with wax paper between layers. Proceed with Step 6 up to 1 day ahead. Store tightly covered in a single layer (frosting stays soft) at cool room temperature or refrigerate.

INGREDIENTS:
1 box (15 oz) refrigerated ready-to-use pie crusts
3 cans (21 oz each) cherry pie filling
1 can (21 oz) blueberry pie filling
1 large egg, slightly beaten in a cup
3 Tbsp sanding or coarse (crystal) sugar
You also need: 1½- to 2-in. star-shaped cookie cutter

PREPARATION:
1. On lightly floured surface with lightly floured rolling pin, roll 1 pastry round into a 12-in. circle. Fit into a 9-in. pie plate, letting edges overhang. Drain 1 can cherry pie filling, combine in a bowl with remaining 2 cans cherry pie filling.

2. Bend a clean 6-in. square of cardboard in middle forming a wedge. Place in upper left corner of pie (like hands of a clock pointing to 9 and 12). Fill with blueberry pie filling. Spoon cherry pie filling into rest of pie. Lift out cardboard.

3. Roll other pastry round into a 10-in. circle. With a pastry wheel or sharp knife, cut round in five ½-in.- wide strips. With cookie cutter, cut 5 or 6 stars from rest of pastry. Brush strips and stars with beaten egg; sprinkle with sanding sugar.

4. Heat oven to 425°F. Starting in middle of pie, carefully place 3 long strips, evenly spaced, across filling toward bottom edge. Cut remaining 2 strips into 4-in.-long pieces. Lay over cherry filling on upper right corner. Press ends of strips into edge of crust. Roll overhang of bottom crust up over ends of strips to form an even rim. Flute or crimp rim. Brush rim with beaten egg; sprinkle with sugar. Place stars on upper left corner of pie.

5. Bake 30 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°F; bake 25 to 30 minutes longer until pastry is golden brown and filling bubbles. Place on wire rack and cool completely.

How about some yummy desserts to celebrate the spirit of patriotism on the Fourth of July!! The cupcakes and cookies being my all time favorites, I would like to share the recipes for some of them. I am sure it would be a big hit amongst your friends and family.

Patriotic Cupcakes

Makes 12
Active: 25 min
Bake: About 25 min
Decorate: Depends on skill
Planning Tip: May be made up to 1 day ahead. Store airtight in a cool place or refrigerate.

INGREDIENTS:

CUPCAKES
1 stick (½ cup) butter
or margarine (not spread), softened
¾ cup sugar
1½ tsp baking powder
¼ tsp salt
2 large eggs
½ cup 1% lowfat milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1⁄3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tub (12 oz) whipped vanilla frosting
Red, white and blue coarse (crystal) sugar
Red and blue gel or paste food colors
You also need: 2 disposable plastic decorating bags, each fitted with a #16 star piping tip

PREPARATION:

1. Heat oven to 350°F. Line 12 regular size (21/2-in.-diam) muffin cups with paper liners.
2. Beat butter, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl with mixer on high speed 1 minute or until well blended. Add eggs; beat 2 minutes or until fluffy. Reduce speed to low; beat in milk and vanilla (batter may look curdled). Beat in flour just until blended. Spoon into lined cups.
3. Bake 20 to 25 minutes until a wooden pick inserted in center of cupcakes comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack 5 minutes before removing from pan to rack to cool completely.
4. To decorate: Spread 1 cup frosting on cupcakes. Place each color sugar on a separate small plate. Lightly press edge of cupcakes in sugar to coat. Divide remaining frosting between 2 small bowls or cups. Color frosting in 1 bowl red, the other blue. Spoon each into a decorating bag. Pipe frostings on cupcakes as shown (see large photo, page 120) or decorate as desired.

The fireworks around the city on the Fourth of July are just breath taking. We can spent almost hours looking up at the wonderful display of lights across the night sky. But it is very important for all of us to be extremely cautious while we are lost in the magic of the fireworks. It is important for all the citizens to be aware of the safety measures and facts about the fireworks. Center for Disease Control and Prevention has come up with something which I came across and thought to be important to share with all of you reading this.

Fourth of July Classroom Activities

Fourth of July is an important milestone in American History and there are a whole lot of ideas to celebrate this day in classrooms .Here are some fun ideas and 4th July Classroom activities on which kids can spent quality time .

FOURTH OF JULY ART PROJECTS:

FIREWORKS PAINTING :Use a very large piece of paper (like bulletin board size) Let children drop small amounts of paint (different colors works good) Have the children swirl the paint out with a spoon, let them keep swirling from the center, in all directions around the drop of paint. Some of them may overlap, and that is fine, too. When it is finished it looks like fireworks bursting in the sky.

TORCHES: Use old newspapers and roll them in a large cone shape. Let children paint the cones. When dry, stuff with red and yellow tissue paper. to be the "flame" of the torch/ * Have the children make crowns, and then they can be the statue of Liberty. I often let them parade.

FLAGS: Start with white construction paper. Children glue on red strips, to make red and white stripes. Then glue a blue square in the top left corner. For the stars you can use white tissue paper, crumpled up, or star stickers.

BELLS: Use paper cups and let children decorate them. (have them add a "Crack", like the Liberty Bell) use string through the bottom of the cup, aand tie on a small 'jingle bell'

ROCKET: make a cone shape, out of construction paper. Decorate with markers. Cut a narrow (approx. 2" long) slits on opposite sides of the wide open end. Use 18" of string, and with the point up, put the string through the slits, and pull sharply on the ends of relaxed string (rocket will fly into air)

WIND SOCKS: use red, white or blue construction paper and roll it length wise. Glue, tape or staple together. Add string as a handle to one end. Add red, white and blue streamers to the other end.

Use only red white and blue items in your art center.

FLAG CAKE: Bake a cake (rectangle shape like 9x13). Frost with white frosting (or whip cream). Put sliced strawberries for the stripes, and use blueberries in the corner.

Fourth Of July Information for classroom Activities.

Tell the students and kids of your classroom that Independence Day is celebrated on the fourth of July each year. It marks the day many years ago that the United States Became independent, or when we decided that we would be our own country. Have the class set up a birthday party for America. Talk about what games children play at their own birthday parties and play some of those games. If possible play "Stars and Stripes Forever" and encourage children to play imaginary instruments along with the music.

Who's Birthday Is ItOn Fourth of July?

Some birthdays come in winter, Some birthdays come in spring. On birthdays there are games to play And lots of songs to sing.

My favorite birthday is in July, And it doesn't belong to me! It's the birthday that lights up the sky For all the world to see!

Rockets glare, trumpets blare, And bands begins to play. Happy Birthday America It's Independence Day!

Independence Day Fireworks...

Use black construction paper and make fireworks using net scrubbies that you use washing your pots and pans. Mix tempera paint in a tray and add paper towels to make more of a stamp pad. The paper towel should be wet not soaking. Too much paint and it won't work. Touch the scrubbie to the paper towel and press on paper. I have gold tempera which really looks spectacular. Use white and red as well and add glitter to the paint. It is a great effect on the black paper.

Star Crowns...

Pre cut stars out of red, white and blue construction paper. Give each child a long white band (about 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide) of construction paper long enough to fit around a child's head. Let each child glue (I colored my white glue with some red paint) as many paper stars on the band as they want. I also put out some red, white and blue stickers for the to put on. When dry, fit to each child's head and staple. The kids just love the star spangled crown.

Baton...

Take a large sheet of newspaper and fold in half. Start at one cornerand roll into a long stick shape. Tape. Children can color newspaper with markers/paint, etc. Attach crepe paper streamers or strips of tissue paper at one end (or anywhere)with a glue stick. Decorate with foil star stickers. Can be used for a parade, dancing, etc.

Playdoh Fun...
Set out red, white and blue playdoh and let the children's imaginations run wild. Art Table... Using a black piece of construction paper, straws, and various colored paint allow the children to drop a small amount of paint onto paper and gently blow through the straw for fireworks in the sky effects.

Sensory Table...
Place red, white or blue colored water in the sensory table with pitchers, measuring cups and other containers to allow the children to experience measurement.

Housekeeping...
Set up the housekeeping area with items you would take along on a picnic. Have the children pretend to make sandwiches and gather items to bring with. Then allow them to imagine what they'd do while they were picnicking.

Cooking Activities

Hamburger Cookies...
The rolls were vanilla wafers. The inside could be a chocolate covered mint or any thing round that looks like a burger. Yellow and red icing from tubes were the ketchup and mustard.

Red, White, And Blue Puffy Paint Pictures for 4th July

Materials:

Flour Salt Water Red and blue food coloring Empty mustard squeeze bottles Cardboard

Directions:

1. Mix equal parts of flour, salt, and water to make the puffy paint.

2. Divide mixture into three different bowls and color one bowl of mixture blue, one bowl red, and leave the last one white.

3. Fill the mustard bottles with the mixture (one color per squeeze bottle).

4. Let the children squeeze the different colors onto the cardboard. 5. Allow the children's artwork to dry. When it is dry, the design will be raised and will sparkle!

Red, White, And Blue Salt Jars

Materials:

Empty baby food jars with lids 9 cups rock salt Red and blue food coloring (PI) cup rubbing alcohol

Directions:

AN ADULT MUST DO THIS PART

1. To make the colored rock salt: Measure 3 cups of rock salt to be blue, 3 cups to be white, and 3 cups to be red, and place each in three separate bowls.

2. Combine (pi) cup of rubbing alcohol with (PI) a bottle or more of red food coloring (you want the colors to be bright). Do the same for the blue food coloring.

3. Mix the red alcohol mixture into one of the bowls of rock salt. Mix well and let sit for about 1 minute. Drain the excess alcohol mixture off of the rock salt. (WARNING: This will smell pretty yucky!) Spread the colored rock salt on cookie sheets and set outside in the sun to dry (this will take only an hour or so). Repeat the same procedure for the blue food coloring. 4. Do nothing with the remaining rock salt because you want it to stay white.

ACTIVITY FOR THE CHILDREN

1. Once the different colors of salt are dry, place them on a table with spoons and baby food jars. 2. Guide the children to spoon the colored rock salt into their jars. 3. Seal the children's creation with the lid.

Stars and Stripes collage:
Give each child blue construction paper(9x12) with strips of red and white paper cut 1x9. Have them glue the strips on and add silver star stickers. (I usually cut my stars out so they are bigger!)

Firework Painting
Go to the grocery store and buy the scouring pads that are round with holes in them.(They are made real stiff-the old style scouring pads) Put out red white and blue paint and have them paint in a circular motion to make fireworks! They turn out real cute!

Fourth of July Windsocks
Assemble this project the same way as the Fourth of July collage however staple together making a cylindar and add streamers on the bottom and a piece of yarn on top to hang!

TISSUE FIREWORKS FOR JULY 4TH

Materials Needed Black construction paper, one sheet per child White chalk Glue White and colored tissue paper Scissors

What to do 1. Cut tissue into 1" squares. 2. Draw fireworks patterns on the black construction paper with chalk (3 per paper). 3. Give each child one piece of prepared black paper and a container of 1" tissue paper squares and a container of white glue with a squeeze top. 4. Instruct the children to use fheir finger tips and ball up each square of tissue. Be sure they pick up only one piece at a time. 5. Instruct the children to place glue dots along one line of a firework, and to place the balled-up tissue on the glue. 6. Have them complete the task, using any color patterns they desire.

Paper Plate Watermelon

(Hint: Use the cheap, flimsy paper plates) Paint inside of paper plate red. Paint outside of paper plate green. Gluewatermelon seeds on red section. When paint is dry, fold plate in half.

Adult: use a fancy scissors to cut out a half circle on fold at top to represent a bite out of the watermelon. Now you have a watermelon slice - a Fourth of July picnic favorite!

FIREWORKS

need bowls of various colors food coloring/water mixtures, straw for each child, white paper

have children dip their straw into the food coloring and blow onto paper. makes a great fireworks effect messy, but fun!

Fireworks painting.

Materials

Liquid tempera paint in vivid, light colors Dark construction paper (blue, black) Queen Anne's lace (with at least 6-8 inch stems) both large and smallblossoms pie pans or shallow plates

Pour paint approximately 1/4 inch deep into pie plates. Have kids dip blossoms face down into paint, then gently onto paper. Looks like fireworks!

hint...encourage kids to place flowers gently down onto paper. Brushing will look like streaming fireworks, gently placing, like starbursts.

Use new blossoms for each color of paint. [They don't hold up well to cleaning

Use only Red, White and Blue Supplies in the Art Center Have a Birthday Party for America Make Red, White and Blue Playdough

Fireworks Painting:
Use a very large piece of paper and let the children drop small amounts of paint (different colors work well). Have the children swirl the paint out with a spoon let them keep swirling from the center, in all directions around the drop of paint. Some of them may overlap, when it is finished it looks like fireworks bursting in the sky.

Statue of Liberty Torches:
Use old newspapers and roll them in a large cone shape. Let the children paint the cones. When dry, stuff with red and yellow tissue paper to be the flame of the torch.

Statue of Liberty Crowns:

Cut crowns from stiff paper to fit around the child's head. Let them decorate them and then with their torches do a parade.

Flags:

Start with white construction paper. Children glue on red strips to make red and white stripes. Then glue a blue square in the top left corner. For the stars you can use crumpled up white tissue paper or star stickers.

Rocket:

Make a cone shape, out of construction paper. Decorate with markers. Cut narrow approx. 2" slits on opposite sides of the wide-open end. Use 18" or string and with the point up, put the string through the slits, and pull sharply on the ends of the relaxed string (rocket should fly into the air).

Wind Socks:
Use red, white or blue construction paper and roll it lengthwise. Glue, tape or staple together. Add string as a handle on one end. Add red, white and blue streamer to the other end.

Stained glass stars materials: white paper, black felt pens, old crayons (peeled), warming tray, oven mitt, scissors. Process: use the black felt pen to outline a large star on the white paper. The blank space inside the lines will be "colored in" with melted crayon.

Place the paper with the star on the warming tray. Put the oven mitt on the non-drawing hand, hold the paper down with this hand. Using the peeled crayons, color in the star. Working slowly will allow the crayon to melt and soak into the paper. Remove the paper from the warming tray. Hold the paper up to the light or a window and see the stained glass effect. The star can be cut out and displayed in a window to resemble a stained glass window.

(note: rub the back of the crayon design with a cotton ball soaked in baby oil for a more transparent design).

Fourth of July parade

Decorate tricycles or other riding or pulling toys for a parade. Some decorating ideas are: weave crepe paper thorugh bicycle spokes; tie balloons or streamers to handle bars; make a float in a wagon; hang noisy cans or pie plates from the bikes. Start a parade around the playground or down the sidewalk. Add marching people, rhythm instruments or noise makers to the parade. Play marching music from a tape recorder. Note: some children have no concept of staying in line or "following the leader" in a parade setting. State a brief practice time before decorating. This will help to alleviate confusion later.

Glitter Paint Fireworks Pictures
Materials: matte board or cardboard white glue, thinned with water in a cup paintbrushes shakers with large holes powdered tempera paint glitter

Paint the entire surface of the matte board or cardboard with thinned white glue. Fill shakers with powdered tempera and glitter. Shake the paint glitter mixture onto the glue to make "fireworks". Dry the project for a long time (a couple of days).

We know that tune very well. In fact we take it for granted when we hear it in parades or on the Fourth of July. No ball game will be complete without it and anyone who's been in the middle or high school band would know how to play it. And it's the Stars and Stripes Forever march. It was composed by John Philip Sousa. It's also our national march because congress made it so in US Code Title 36, Section 304

Today is the day that Stars and Stripes Forever! was performed for the first time in public in Philadelphia in 1897. You can listen to the recording by Edison here. Check out these lyrics too!

Fourth of July Recipes and Menus

The Fourth of July is such an easy holiday to celebrate. The theme, colors, and even lots of traditional foods and recipes are built right in. July 4th red, white and blue accessories are everywhere! It's easy to make your backyard or picnic spot the most colorful in your town for entertaining.

One of my best Independence Day memories is swimming with my family at one of Minneapolis' many lakes, then going to my grandparents' house for a great meal and a perfect view of fireworks from their backyard. The "Traditional" menu with recipes on the next page is my family's Fourth of July meal. You'll also find a "Red, White and Blue" menu, plus recipes for a portable picnic and a totally make ahead meal so your party is special and easy on you.

When you invite family and friends to your bash, make sure you specify this is a casual, active party! Decorations can include a red, white and blue tablecloth and napkins, casual pottery, candles in the holiday colors (my favorite), and of course lots of flags.
If you are hosting this party at your home on July 4th, think about lighting after dark. Sitting on a patio or porch on a warm summer night, waiting for the fireworks to begin after eating fabulous party food, is one of the highlights of summer. Tiny white lights add a wonderful touch, as do candles, tiki torches, paper lanterns, and oil lamps. Make sure you have great outdoor games for the kids and adults. Badminton, croquet, horseshoes, lawn bowling, touch football and water games add to the fun. In case of inclement weather, set up a picnic on the floor of your living room! Kids of all ages will love this celebration.

Food for the Fourth must be delicious, easy to eat, and easy on the cook! Grilling is a must, of course. Great barbecue recipes are most important, since sizzling food wonderfully flavored by the coals is a summer tradition. Remember to enjoy yourself as you ooh and aah over the fireworks, well sated by your delicious meal. And have a wonderful and safe holiday!
For the greatest ease, and so you also have a wonderful time at your party, all of these recipes can be made ahead - except for the grilled meats. The potato and pasta salad recipes are actually best if made a day ahead, if you have the time. The Peanut Parfait Dessert and other chilled desserts are also best made ahead. Choose one or more recipes from the Red, White and Blue menu to add some patriotic flavor to any of the other menus too.

Feel free to substitute any deli foods for any of the recipes below - remember, the key is to enjoy your own party! Set a lovely table, bring out all the food, and fire up the grill. Usually at any party, one person loves to be the grillmaster, so that job can be crossed off your list! Food safety is always on my mind when I'm entertaining. Remember - keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold.

The general rule is to not leave foods out at room temperature for more than two hours. Steamy summer weather changes this advice! If it's very hot, foods should be out of the fridge for only one hour. This way everything tastes better, stays fresher, and you can relax knowing everyone will have a great time.

Make sure if you are taking any of these menus to a picnic spot that everything is well packed in a clean cooler, with lots of ice in double plastic bags. Place the food that is most perishable (the meat, in this case) on the bottom. Don't place any uncooked food on top of cooked dishes, and remember as you grill the meat to serve the finished steaks on a clean platter to avoid cross-contamination. Food safety is really a simple concept if you follow these rules. Remember to enjoy yourself as you ooh and aah over the fireworks, well sated by your delicious meal. And have a wonderful and safe Fourth!

United States Declaration of Independence

he United States Declaration of Independence was an act of the Second Continental Congress, adopted on July 4, 1776, which declared that the Thirteen Colonies were independent of the Kingdom of Great Britain. The Declaration, written chiefly by Thomas Jefferson, explained the justifications for breaking away, and was an expansion of the Lee Resolution (passed by Congress on July 2), which first proclaimed independence. An engrossed copy of the declaration was signed by most of the delegates on August 2 and is now on display in the National Archives in Washington, D.C. The Declaration is considered to be the founding document of the United States of America, where July 4th is celebrated as Independence Day.

U.S. President Abraham Lincoln succinctly explained the central importance of the Declaration to American history in his Gettysburg Address of 1863:

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."
